Can Hempcrete Be Used in Commercial Buildings?

Hempcrete can be considered for commercial projects, including offices, hospitality spaces, adaptive reuse projects, interior partitions, specialty spaces, and other buildings where a non-load-bearing hemp-lime wall assembly fits the design intent.

The key distinction is between material capability and a prescriptive code path. Hemp-lime construction is addressed in the 2024 IRC Appendix BL for hemp-lime construction, which provides a defined framework for residential applications governed by the International Residential Code.

Commercial projects are generally evaluated under the International Building Code rather than the IRC. That means commercial teams should not assume that residential hemp-lime provisions automatically apply to an office, retail space, school, multifamily development, or other commercial occupancy.

Instead, the architect, engineer, contractor, owner, and local code official should evaluate the proposed system together. The alternative materials, designs, and methods provisions in the International Building Code provide the broader framework for how building officials may evaluate materials and assemblies that are not addressed through a prescriptive path.

That is not a guaranteed approval process. It is a project-specific review that depends on the jurisdiction, occupancy type, wall assembly, fire requirements, structural design, documentation, and the authority having jurisdiction.

What a Commercial Project Team Needs to Confirm

Where Hempcrete May Fit Best

Commercial hempcrete projects are strongest when the material is being considered for the role it can actually perform. For example, a renovation team may explore hempcrete as part of an interior insulation strategy for an older brick building. A new construction project may evaluate hempcrete blocks within a timber or steel frame where the design team wants an insulating, vapor-permeable wall approach.

The decision should be based on the full assembly, not a broad promise that one material solves every building challenge.
