Why Hempcrete blocks?

Natural

Made from plant-based and mineral ingredients for breathable walls without synthetic binders.

mold resistant

Regulates indoor humidity & air quality, keeping mildew and mold out.

pest resistant

Hemp-lime does not serve as a food source for termites, unlike traditional wood framing.

Made in usa

Grown and processed in Virginia.

Performance
Hemp hurd performs across multiple industrial sectors. Each application leverages specific material properties suited to the work at hand.

Built for your project

Handcrafted hempcrete blocks designed to fit your project — from new construction to renovation.

New construction

Infill for timber or steel framing (Non-load bearing).

retrofit & rennovation

Interior insulation for historic brick or stone buildings.

interior partitions

Acoustic separation walls for offices and hotels.

What’s Possible with Hempcrete

How others are building sustainably with hempcrete.

Timber & Steel Frame Infill

Non-load-bearing blocks installed within timber or steel framing systems to create a breathable, high-performance building envelope.

Historic renovation

Interior insulation for brick and stone buildings, improving energy efficiency without trapping moisture in older structures.

acoustic partitions

Separation walls for apartments, hotels, and offices—naturally reducing sound transfer between spaces.

Fire seperation walls

Installed between building units or commercial zones to provide rated fire resistance and added protection.

Custom projects

From feature walls and bars to custom architectural elements, hempcrete can be molded into unique designs. Our own retail store even features a hempcrete reception desk and product bar.

climate controlled spaces

Ideal for wineries, archives, and specialty storage facilities where stable temperature and humidity matter most.

From Stalk to Finished material

Cultivation and harvest

We work with local farmers to grow industrial hemp specifically for its strong stalks. Once the plants are ready, they’re harvested at the right time to ensure consistent, high-quality material.

Separate the stalk

After harvest, hemp stalks are mechanically processed through decortication, a method that separates the woody inner core from the outer fibers. This process produces hemp hurd, the natural material used for animal bedding.

Form & mold the blocks

The processed hemp hurd is blended with a lime-based binder & water, then placed into molds. Each block is carefully formed by hand to ensure consistent shape, density, and performance.

Curing

Once molded, the blocks are left to cure under controlled conditions. During this time, the lime binder hardens and begins to mineralize, strengthening the block without synthetic additives.

Quality check & delivery

After curing, each batch is inspected for consistency and performance. The finished blocks are then prepared for palletizing and delivery, ready for installation on-site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hempcrete load-bearing?

No. Hempcrete blocks are designed as non-load-bearing infill within timber or steel framing systems. The structural frame carries the load, while hempcrete provides insulation, moisture regulation, and fire resistance.

How does hempcrete compare to traditional concrete?

Hempcrete is significantly lighter and provides thermal insulation and vapor permeability that standard concrete does not. Unlike conventional concrete, hempcrete is carbon negative and helps regulate indoor humidity.

Is hempcrete actually fire resistant?

Yes. Hempcrete wall assemblies have achieved 60–120 minute fire ratings. The material chars when exposed to flame but does not ignite like exposed wood framing. Giving your family more time to evacuate in emergency situations.

How long does hempcrete last?

When properly installed and protected with appropriate finishes, hempcrete can last for decades. The lime binder continues to mineralize over time, contributing to long-term durability.

What types of projects is hempcrete best suited for?

Hempcrete is commonly used in new construction as wall infill, interior insulation for historic renovations, and acoustic or fire-rated partition walls in residential and commercial buildings.

Does hempcrete require special finishes?

Hempcrete typically requires breathable finishes such as lime-based plasters or mineral renders. These allow the wall system to maintain vapor permeability and long-term durability.
