Hempcrete Insulation vs. Fiberglass: How the Wall Systems Differ
Hempcrete and fiberglass can both be part of a building’s thermal-control strategy, but they are not interchangeable materials.
Fiberglass is commonly used as cavity insulation inside a framed wall. Hempcrete is a non-structural hemp-lime infill system that works with a structural frame and needs to be evaluated as part of the full wall assembly.
That difference matters before comparing a single R-value number, a material price, or a product specification.
Start With the Wall Assembly
A typical fiberglass wall uses wood or steel framing, insulation placed in the cavities, and separate layers for air control, water management, finishes, and other functions. Its overall performance depends on the insulation, framing percentage, sheathing, air sealing, cladding, vapor-control strategy, installation quality, and climate.
A hemp-lime wall uses a structural frame for load-bearing work and hempcrete for non-structural infill. The thickness, density, binder, finish layers, openings, and details determine how that assembly performs.
The 2024 International Residential Code Appendix BL provides a residential code reference for hemp-lime construction. Local adoption, the applicable code edition, the project type, and the local official’s interpretation still determine how that path applies to a specific build.
Neither approach has one universal performance number. The useful comparison is the wall that will actually be built, including structure, insulation or infill, exterior layers, interior finish, openings, and water-management details.
R-Value Is Useful, but It Is Not the Whole Decision
Fiberglass products are commonly specified with published R-values, and a project team can compare those values by thickness and product type. Hempcrete systems also have published thermal-performance ranges, but results vary with mix density and wall thickness.
The completed wall can perform differently than an insulation-only value suggests. Framing, fasteners, service cavities, air leakage, exterior layers, and installation quality all affect whole-wall thermal behavior.
For example, a framed wall has locations where insulation is interrupted by structure, headers, openings, and other details. A hemp-lime wall uses a different approach, with non-structural infill placed around a structural frame. That does not mean every hempcrete wall performs the same way, but it does mean a project team should compare complete assemblies instead of relying on a single material label.

Moisture and Drying Need Project-Specific Detailing
Fiberglass itself is not a moisture-management system. A fiberglass wall depends on the surrounding assembly to control bulk water, air leakage, condensation risk, and drying. If water enters a wall, the correct response depends on the source, duration, affected materials, and framing condition.
Hemp-lime materials are often selected for vapor-open wall designs, but that does not make a wall immune to leaks or poor detailing. Foundations, flashing, roof design, drainage, window installation, finish layers, and climate all still matter.

Installation Is Not a Like-for-Like Swap
Fiberglass can be an efficient option in an existing framed cavity when the rest of the wall design is already set. It is widely available, familiar to most crews, and can be appropriate for many conventional projects.
Hempcrete is generally considered earlier in the design process because it can affect wall depth, the relationship between the frame and infill, installation sequence, drying time, and finish details.
That makes hempcrete a better fit for some new-build or major-envelope projects than for a simple insulation replacement. It is not a drop-in substitute for every attic, crawlspace, or retrofit cavity.
The installation method also matters. Cast-in-place hempcrete, sprayed hemp-lime systems, and prefabricated blocks each have different site requirements, schedules, and detailing considerations. Before making a final comparison, a project team should confirm the material form, installer experience, drying expectations, and finish system.
Cost Comparison: Look Beyond the Material Line Item
A material-only comparison can be misleading. Fiberglass is widely available and often has a lower upfront material cost. Hempcrete can require different labor, formwork or block handling, wall dimensions, finishes, scheduling, and project coordination.
The right budget comparison is project-specific. Ask for an estimate that accounts for the full envelope scope, not just the insulation material. That allows the owner and design team to see where costs sit in framing, installation, air and water control, finishes, and scheduling.
It also helps to identify the real priority before pricing options. Is the project trying to improve thermal performance, build a vapor-open wall, use a particular material system, or simplify a specific wall design? The answer shapes which options are worth evaluating.
When Fiberglass May Make Sense
Fiberglass remains a practical choice for many applications. It can make sense when a conventional framed wall is already designed, wall thickness is constrained, budget is tightly controlled, or the work involves an existing cavity that does not justify a full envelope redesign.
It can also be a reasonable option when the project team has a clear plan for air sealing, water management, vapor control, and installation quality.
When Hempcrete May Be Worth Evaluating
Hempcrete may be worth evaluating when the project team is designing a complete wall assembly around a structural frame and wants a mineral-bound, non-structural infill material.
It is especially worth discussing early when wall depth, finishes, detailing, material sourcing, and enclosure strategy are still open design decisions. It requires coordination among the designer, installer, supplier, and local code official, but that work is easier during planning than after the wall design is fixed.
