Hemp Fiber vs. Hurd: Two Materials from One Stalk, Two Different Jobs

Industrial hemp is often discussed as one material, but a processed hemp stalk produces two very different raw materials: fiber and hurd.
That distinction matters for builders, manufacturers, farmers, and material buyers. The outer bast fiber is long, flexible, and suited to applications that need reinforcement or tensile strength. The inner hurd is woody, lightweight, and absorbent, making it useful for hempcrete, animal bedding, and other bulk-material applications.
Both materials come from the same crop. They are separated during processing, then routed into different supply chains based on what the finished product needs to do. The hemp stalk has two useful material streams
Industrial hemp is a bast-fiber crop, meaning the long fibers run along the outside of the stalk. Inside that outer layer is the woody core, known as hurd or shiv.
According to Rutgers Cooperative Extension’s hemp-fiber guidance, the long outer bast fiber and the inner hurd have distinct physical characteristics and end uses. The bast fiber provides length and flexibility, while the hurd creates a lighter, more porous material with different handling and performance properties.
Those materials do not come out of the field separately. They are separated through retting and decortication, the process that turns harvested stalks into usable industrial inputs. Hemp hurd is used for bulk, absorbency, and insulation
Hemp hurd is the woody inner core of the stalk. It is shorter, more rigid, and more porous than bast fiber, which makes it useful in applications that need bulk, moisture management, or insulating properties.
One of the most familiar uses is hempcrete. When hurd is combined with a compatible lime-based binder and water, it can become part of a non-load-bearing hemp-lime wall assembly. The structure still carries the building loads, but the hemp-lime material can contribute insulation and support a vapor-permeable wall design when used with the right framing, finishes, flashing, and moisture-management details.
Hurd is also commonly used for animal bedding. Its physical structure makes it useful in stalls, coops, and other environments where moisture management and regular cleanout matter.
